Feline Dental Problems Prevention and Care

Feline Dental Problems Prevention and Care

Did you know that about 85% of all cats have some form of dental disease by the age of three? This is a statistic that can be significantly reduced by proper pet dental care starting when they're kittens. Cats typically suffer from three types of dental disease: gingivitis, periodontitis, and resorption. The first two are caused by a buildup of plaque, while the cause of resorption (gradual tooth degeneration) is not fully understood as it begins from inside the tooth.

At Rock Creek Veterinary Hospital, we take pride in offering comprehensive dental care for your furry feline. We are pleased to serve the pets of Broomfield, Louisville, Boulder, Thornton, and Superior, CO. So, if your kitty is in need, our cat teeth cleaning procedures are second to none! In the meantime, here's some more information about how to spot dental issues and prevent them.

Signs of Dental Problems in Your Cat

If you notice your cat exhibiting any of the following symptoms or behaviors, it's probably time to schedule a dental exam:

- Drooling

- Unusually bad breath

- Pawing at the face or mouth

- Dropping food while eating

- Odd chewing

- Bleeding from the mouth

- Red or inflamed gums

- Swelling around the face or mouth

- Lack of appetite

Prevention of Dental Issues

The best way to prevent dental problems in your cat is to schedule regular dental exams. It's recommended that your cat has at least one exam per year when the vet can take X-rays, conduct a thorough exam, and perform an in-depth cleaning. Usually done under anesthesia, it allows the vet to remove all tartar and plaque from both above and below the gum line, ensuring their teeth are as healthy as possible.

Proper Care At Home

Brushing your cat's teeth a few times a week can help maintain dental hygiene in between vet visits. Be sure to use pet toothpaste along with either a brush or a damp cloth. Consider purchasing dental treats and toys that promote dental health.
